HSE in Minsk: Developing Cooperation with Belarus

On May 26–29, 2026, an HSE University team visited Minsk, the capital of Belarus. The purpose of the trip was to meet and hold talks with Belarusian universities and scientific organisations—HSE University's current and prospective partners.
‘Universities live in long cycles, making it extremely important to develop projects that will last for decades, and this must be done in cooperation with each other,’ said HSE Vice Rector Elena Odoevskaia. ‘It is encouraging to see that our colleagues share this aspiration and are sincerely eager to work together and to create projects and products in our countries' interests.’
During the trip, HSE University representatives visited several major Belarusian scientific and educational institutions. During a meeting with the leadership of the Belarusian State University, HSE University's partner since 2023 and the republic's leading multidisciplinary university, a wide range of topics was discussed: developing student mobility, joint research projects and conferences in biotechnology and space exploration, etc. In addition, the two universities agreed to implement youth policy projects together.
The HSE team discussed the prospect of joint research projects in biotechnology at the Belarusian National Technical University (BNTU). BNTU is a leading technical university in Belarus with a rich history of scientific achievements. Just like HSE University, it actively conducts interdisciplinary research. One of the key areas in this field is the application of artificial intelligence in biomedical research, and, being a leading centre for AI studies and application, HSE University is willing to actively share its expertise.
‘We see great potential in working with Belarusian partners, and so we aim to establish cooperation at the level of all HSE campuses. HSE University–St. Petersburg, which I represent, is happy to welcome BNTU students and teachers. Our universities share common values, and this, of course, is already a solid foundation to build our partnership upon,’ said Maria Kiseleva, Head of the International Office at HSE University–St. Petersburg.
The HSE team discussed the possibility of environmental and climatic research projects with the Belarusian State Technological University (BSTU), given BSTU's focus on environmental management.
During the trip, the HSE team visited Belarus’ leading medical research institution, N. N. Alexandrov National Cancer Centre of Belarus. An agreement was reached on the implementation of interdisciplinary projects, such as the use of artificial intelligence for accurate cancer diagnosis, where contributions from HSE University as a top-tier AI development centre will be very important. According to Elena Odoevskaia, socially significant projects of this kind deserve great respect and should be prioritised.
In addition to negotiations with the partners, HSE representatives took part in forums of rectors of Russia, Brazil, and Belarus, where Elena Odoevskaia presented HSE University's key development areas and spoke about successful cases of cooperation with Brazilian and Belarusian partners.
The eventful program of the trip confirmed the importance of promoting science and education in close coordination with the partners, while the network of established contacts will enable HSE University to effectively build cooperation with them, taking into account each country’s national interests.

HSE and Karakalpak State University Agree on Cooperation
HSE University and Berdakh Karakalpak State University have signed a cooperation agreement to strengthen collaboration in research, education, and innovation. Through the expertise of its Сentre of Digital Technologies for Nature-Based Solutions of the Carbon Measurement Supersites Programme, HSE University will work with colleagues from Uzbekistan to assess climate risks and evaluate opportunities for implementing nature-based climate projects in the region. From July 20 to 27, 2026, the HSE Faculty of Urban and Regional Development (FURD) is hosting a summer school for students from Tianjin University dedicated to the preservation of cultural heritage. Throughout the week, participants have attended lectures, practical workshops, and field visits to some of Moscow’s most iconic heritage sites. The summer school is the faculty’s first international programme of this kind and forms part of the expanding educational cooperation between Russia and China.
HSE University and Peking University Expand Their Partnership
Peking University President Gao Song paid his first visit to HSE University as part of his first overseas trip since taking office in May 2026. The main purpose of the talks was to consolidate existing areas of cooperation and expand joint projects between HSE University and Peking University within the framework of the Cross Years of Russia–China Cooperation in Education (2026–2027).
Education in a Changing World: Russian–Chinese Dialogue in Beijing
How are universities, vocational education systems, and researcher training programmes evolving in response to new challenges? These questions were at the heart of the international forum ‘Reconfiguring Education in a Changing World: Russia–China Dialogues on Higher Education, Skills, and Research Training’, held in China in mid-June. The event was jointly organised by the HSE Institute of Education and the Graduate School of Education of Peking University, which hosted the forum on its campus.
HSE University and Unicamp Develop Partnership Projects
At the end of May, HSE University in Moscow received a delegation from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp, Brazil), which has held a strong, long-standing partnership with HSE. The meeting in Moscow took place as part of the International Partner Week, which was held from May 19 to 22 by HSE University–St Petersburg. The event was attended by Unicamp representatives: Rafael Dias, Director of International Affairs, and Milena Serafim, Associate Director of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.
HSE University at IRES 2026: Student Recruitment, Space Projects, and New Partnerships with India
The second Indo-Russian Education Summit (IRES 2026) took place in New Delhi on May 28–29. This year, the event brought together more than 70 leading Russian and Indian universities. Representatives from HSE University’s Moscow and St Petersburg campuses introduced prospective students to the university’s educational opportunities at the exhibition and shared their experience in developing Russian–Indian academic cooperation.
HSE and Sultan Qaboos University: Expanding Academic and Research Partnership
In May 2026, a delegation from Sultan Qaboos University (Oman) made an official visit to HSE University. The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss new forms of cooperation and partnership and to identify areas of mutual interest. Representatives of HSE’s Moscow, St Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod campuses spoke about their shared interest in expanding joint projects, primarily in the field of artificial intelligence—a strategic development priority for both universities.
HSE and Peking University Expand Cooperation in Civil Society Research
A seminar involving Russian and Chinese scholars on cooperation between the state and non-profit organisations was held in Beijing. Participants discussed the evolution of institutions, cooperation practices, and challenges facing the development of the non-profit sector, and also presented the results of their research. The meeting concluded with agreements to expand joint projects and academic exchanges.
HSE to Bring Together Experts from World’s Leading Universities in St Petersburg
From May 18 to 22, 2026, HSE University–St Petersburg will become a hub of global academic dialogue. International Partners’ Week will bring together more than 100 delegates from 47 universities across 20 countries.
HSE and Peking University Discuss Prospects for Expanding Cooperation
In Moscow, HSE University’s leadership met with a delegation from Peking University headed by its President, Gong Qihuang. During the meeting, the parties agreed to strengthen partnership between the two universities within the framework of the Cross Years of Russian–Chinese Cooperation in Education (2026–2027).
